Opening Prayer
Exodus 20:3-6
“You shall have no other gods before me. “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
The Book of Exodus, while Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving God’s law, the Israelites grew restless.
Once these things settle into the deepest part of your heart, they begin to:
So now comes the real question — one only you can answer: Has something else moved into the place in your heart that belongs to God?
Mark 12:28-31
One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”
Turn to:
1 John 5:21
“Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”
Idolatry According to Scripture:
Colossians 3:5–6
Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.
Galatians 5:13-26
You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
Paul makes a shocking statement: covetousness (greed) is idolatry. Greed is not merely a character flaw — it is a form of false worship. In Galatians 5:20 Idolatry is listed among the works of the flesh. That means it is an offshoot of the fallen nature of man. As long as our flesh is alive and uncrucified, idolatry will always try to rise. Paul admonished the Colossian church to put to death the flesh so that they could overcome idolatry. Victory requires crucifixion.
Idolatry and the Companion Spirits: Many believers don’t understand that demonic spirits often work in groups. Their teamwork is, sadly, sometimes better than the teamwork of church members. The spirit of greed works with the spirit of idolatry. The spirit of lust works with adultery and fornication.
The spirit of anger works with the spirit of murder. Jesus revealed this in:
Matthew 12:43–45
“Now when the unclean spirit goes out of a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and does not find it. “Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came’; and when it comes, it finds it unoccupied, swept, and put in order. “Then it goes and takes along with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first. That is the way it will also be with this evil generation.”
Modern Forms of Idolatry: Many believers think idolatry only means bowing before statues. But today, idolatry has many disguises. Money can be an idol. The Bible says, “The love of money is the root of all evil.” Money is not evil — the love of money is. Work hard. Start a business. Provide for your family. But never let money become your god. Never let money compromise your eternity. Jesus says in
Matthew 6:33
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Anything that takes the place of God — no matter how precious — becomes an idol. Jesus taught this clearly in Mark 12:
Mark 12:29–30
“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
“I am the Lord; that is my name! I will not yield my glory to another or my praise to idols.
When Idolatry Enters the Church. Some Christians still bow down to images, statues, or even the pictures of pastors. This is unbiblical, dangerous, and idolatrous. Samuel told Saul in
1 Samuel 15:23
For rebellion is like the sin of divination.
Idolatry brought judgment upon Israel repeatedly. Though they were God’s chosen people, He never spared them when they turned to idols. He allowed their enemies to overpower them until they repented.
Whatever steals your passion, affection, and devotion from God — becomes your idol. If you find something, dethrone it. Put it back in its proper place. God must sit alone upon the throne of your heart.
A Call to Return: Idolatry grieves the heart of God. It provokes His wrath. But today, He extends mercy and calls us to return to Him while Grace still exists.
Matthew 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
Matthew 24:3
The disciples asked Jesus, “What will be the sign of your coming and the end of the age?”
Matthew 24:14
Jesus replied, “And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.”
Matthew 13:40
“Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the end of the age.”
The New Testament describes the age of grace as the current period in which salvation is offered through faith in Jesus Christ. This age will culminate in the return of Christ, marking the end of the age. The grace provided during this time is essential for believers as they await the fulfillment of God’s plan.
Guard your heart. Let nothing take God’s place. Let nothing steal your affection for God. Let nothing be worshiped in your life but The Lord God Almighty. Allow God to purify your heart, your mind, your body and remove every idol, and make God the center of your life.
